NAVC Announces Return Of The Vetty Awards®

The Only Marketing Competition Dedicated To Animal Health Is Back With Expanded Eligibility And New Categories

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) announced The VETTY Awards, the marketing competition dedicated to animal health, is returning after being postponed last year due to the impact of COVID-19.

The world’s leading provider of veterinary education, the NAVC, introduced the VETTY Awards in 2017. The competition recognizes and rewards the marketing, advertising, public relations, digital, social, design, events, promotions and educational materials created on behalf of large and small animals, pet pharmaceuticals, foods, diagnostic equipment, professional associations, advocacy groups and more.

The VETTY’s eligibility has been expanded this year to include all work produced between January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2021. Several new categories dedicated to the digital and virtual experiences that have become increasingly popular over the last two years have also been added.

Participants can enter their work at thevettys.com from now until November 30th. Entries submitted by November 15th will receive a discounted rate.

Gold, silver and bronze winners will be unveiled at the NAVC’s annual Veterinary Meeting & Expo (VMX) 2022, which runs January 15-19, 2022 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL and everywhere virtually. Each year the Vetty Awards attract thousands of veterinary professionals from around the globe. The Best of Show, Judge’s Awards and NAVC Spotlight winner will be revealed live on-stage before VMX’s traditional Monday night concert.

“The VETTYs have become a signature part of VMX, and something so many of our exhibitors and attendees look forward to each year,” said NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill. “We’re really excited to announce this year’s competition, and can’t wait to reward all of the amazing work that’s been produced in these extraordinary times.”

More details on the VETTY Awards categories, entry fees, and how to enter can be found at thevettys.com.

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) today announced the launch of Level Up: Veterinary Nurses & Technicians, a new virtual summit it will host annually in October during Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week. In honor of the extraordinary work veterinary nurses and technicians do, and thanks to the generous support of sponsors like Vetoquinol, the summit will be free to veterinary nurses and technicians worldwide. The veterinary nurse summit marks the first of the new Level Up series of virtual learning events that the NAVC will host under its Virtual XP learning umbrella. Registration opens today for Level Up: Veterinary Nurses & Technicians which will take place October 16 – 17.

Two veterinary nurses/technicians provide care to a small kitten.

“The NAVC is dedicated to helping our veterinary nurses and technicians reach their full potential every day so they can continue to deliver their best to all who depend on them: veterinarians, clients and, most of all, patients. This is particularly important and timely given the surge in pet ownership and their owner’s desire to provide the best veterinary medical care possible,” said Gene O’Neill, NAVC CEO. “The veterinary nurse virtual summit will enable veterinary nurses and technicians all over the world to participate and benefit in a learning forum many otherwise would not be able to attend. It’s very exciting and furthers the NAVC’s commitment to suppor the entire veterinary healthcare team.”

Level Up: Veterinary Nurses & Technicians provides veterinary nurses and technicians with a high-quality, complimentary virtual CE event in association with Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week. Each year, education sessions and sponsorship opportunities will be centered around a theme based on feedback from readers of the industry-leading publication, Today’s Veterinary Nurse, published by the NAVC. This year’s theme is Patient Advocacy, which supports the unique role veterinary nurses and technicians play as advocates for patient health to their owners, veterinarians, and practice managers. Topics include patient advocacy, behavior, anesthesia and pain management, emergency critical care, and well-being. Veterinary nurses and technicians will receive up to six hours of Continuing Education over two days through the NAVC’s online learning platform, VetFolio.com.

“The NAVC has truly distinguished itself in its support for veterinary nurses and technicians. I’m so proud of the leadership role it continues to take to advocate for veterinary nurses and technicians everywhere,” said Paige Allen, MS, Registered Veterinary Technician and Assistant Director of Academic Advising and Recruitment for the Veterinary Nursing Program at Purdue University, College of Veterinary Medicine and NAVC Board President.

Innovations And Consumer Trends Driving Changes In The Veterinary Industry

Innovations And Consumer Trends Driving Changes In The Veterinary Industry

How Pet Owners, New Technology and COVID-19 Are Reshaping the Delivery of Animal Healthcare

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

Digital healthcare, telemedicine, COVID-19 and millennials are driving changes in the veterinary industry and the veterinary healthcare system. These are among the topics to be featured at the 2021 Veterinary Innovation + NAVC Media eCommerce Summit in Kansas City, MO, August 27 – 29. Changemakers and thought leaders will convene to learn the latest research and technology, determine what the future of veterinary medicine looks like and discuss how the industry must change to meet the needs of veterinary professionals and consumers. The Summit is jointly hosted by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) and the Veterinary Innovation Council (VIC).\

“Pet owners are sending our industry a message and driving change in the way they want and expect their pets to receive care,” said Gene O’Neill, NAVC CEO and VIC Past Chair. “The Veterinary Innovation + eCommerce Summit provides professionals the platform to discuss and design the future of the veterinary profession alongside global leaders in animal health. The most creative and innovative minds will gather to analyze and uncover the emerging trends in veterinary care, including where the profession is headed and how veterinary organizations can compete and thrive in the animal health industry.”

Session Highlights:

  • New technologies and increasing implementation of digital health tools are changing the human and animal health industries and driving long term changes in the veterinary industry. Wearables, similar to those in human medicine, are being used to track animal activity and eating patterns and, in some cases, notify pet owners and veterinarians when the animal is in distress. Artificial intelligence that can read a million radiographs per hour versus 50 per day can be implemented to create a more efficient workplace. These topics along with many more advances will be presented in the Convergence of Frontiers in Veterinary and Human Healthcare session led by Eleanor Green, DVM, DACVIM, DABVP.
  • Genomics allows doctors and researchers to look at specific genes that are associated with cancer and disease, identify where problems are occurring and better understand the causes. As animal medicine continues to parallel advances in human medicine, this research can be applied to veterinary healthcare to provide better understanding and treatment. The overlap between human and animal medicine will be the focus of Glimpsing the Future: The Coming “Omics” Revolution in Veterinary Medicine led by David Haworth, DVM, PhD.
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, pet adoptions skyrocketed, the demand for veterinary care increased and veterinary teams were forced to deliver care in ways never imagined before. The pet owner and veterinarian relationship became virtual, and looking forward, telemedicine and other online options are expected to become a deciding factor for pet owners when seeking care for their pet and choosing a veterinarian. Mark Cushing, JD, and Deb Leon, CEO and founder of whiskerDocs, will cover this in their session, Telemedicine in the United States: What We’ve Learned So Far and Next Steps, and Ainsley Bone, DVM, MBA, and John Dillon will also tackle telehealth and technology in Lessons Learned at the Intersection of Telehealth and eCommerce.
  • Millennials, the largest and most active group of pet owners, view their pets as an extension of the family and expect the same quality of care for their animals that they receive for themselves. In COVID-19 Impact and Implications for the Animal Health Industry, Kerry O’Hara, PhD, explores how the undeniable shift in pet owner mindset is changing the way the animal health industry is pivoting to deliver care today and in the future.

Breakthroughs in Veterinary Medicine Take Center Stage at VMX 2021

New Technologies and Breakthroughs in Veterinary Industry Take Center Stage at VMX 2021

Advances in Animal Medicine are Helping Cats, Dogs, and Even Penguins Live Longer, Better Quality Lives

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

The first major conference since COVID-19 for the veterinary industry wrapped up Wednesday at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Nearly 10,500 veterinary professionals from around the world attended the 38th annual Veterinary Meeting & Expo (VMX) in person and virtually to learn the latest advances in animal medicine.

“At a time when people were separated from family and friends this past year, pets provided great companionship and comfort. As adoptions of cats, dogs and exotic animals like birds and reptiles reached record levels, so has the need for veterinary care,” said Gene O’Neill, NAVC CEO. “At VMX, veterinary professionals are learning the latest in diagnosis and treatment so they can provide the best care possible to animals of all kinds.

“It’s been a great conference! People are happy to be back, meeting and learning together. You can see the smiles under their masks! And those who attended virtually were able to connect and engage with colleagues while learning from the world’s most renowned experts in veterinary medicine,” O’Neill added.

Helping dogs age better mentally and physically. Up to 50% of dogs injure both of their knees, but not all require surgery. As part of her presentation on how to help dogs stay agile and active as they age, Dr. Clara Goh performed a live orthopedic exam to help veterinarians assess dogs and decide when they may need surgery or alternative treatments. Dr. Valarie Tynes presented on the signs of canine dementia and new options to slow down its progression. She also spoke about separation anxiety and how to manage it as people return to work.

Reversing diabetes in cats. Dr. Audrey Cook presented game-changing options in managing and treating feline diabetes. These advances may put an end to daily insulin injections, easing the stress and demand on pet parents when caring for diabetic cats.

New technologies and procedures are saving aquatic animals. Aquatic and zoo veterinarians shared their knowledge from everyday experiences, whether it’s an emergency surgery on a penguin or a first-of-its-kind brain surgery on a marine mammal, a Northern fur seal. Dr. Jen Flower and Dr. Tres Clarke shared new technologies including portable ultrasounds the size of an iPad to examine aquatic animals and new diagnostic tools that look at tiny nerve vessels never seen before.

VMX 2021 included more than 600 sessions of continuing education and hands-on workshops at the live event in Orlando and more than 300 virtual and OnDemand sessions, which will be available through September 3, 2021. Attendees were able to enjoy the award-winning VMX Expo Hall onsite at the Orange County Convention Center and virtually through an engaging, 3D interactive experience.

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) will host its 20th annual NAVC Institute, an interactive and immersive conference for veterinary professionals to master techniques they can take back to their clinics and immediately apply to their daily work. Emergency Medicine for Everyone, one of the seven focused programs to be offered, addresses the critical need for primary care veterinarians to be able to confidently handle the growing number of emergency cases and to continue to provide the best healthcare for animals

“With a shortage of emergency veterinarians, there is an urgent need for emergency-trained professionals,” said NAVC Institute’s Emergency Medicine for Everyone course leader, Elke Rudloff, DVM, DACVECC, cVMA. “This course contains sessions that focus on teaching veterinarians who don’t specialize in emergency medicine how to prepare for and treat the most common small animal emergencies.”

As advances in animal medicine parallel human medicine, veterinarians must find ways to stay current on emerging trends, technologies and techniques in order to provide the best healthcare for animals. At NAVC Institute, participants learn from world-renowned veterinarians in a small, intimate classroom setting, allowing them to receive intensive one-on-one training with experienced instructors. This unique environment increases knowledge retention and makes course materials easier to understand, absorb and take back to their practice to provide the best veterinary care for animals.

“Pets are an integral part of our lives and members of our family,” said Dr. Dana Varble, NAVC’s Chief Veterinary Officer. “The great news is pets are living longer, better quality lives thanks to the advances in animal medicine. Treatments that have readily been available in human medicine, whether it’s cancer or arthritis treatment, are now available to pets. With so many changes in animal medicine, veterinarians must keep up and stay abreast of the latest techniques in diagnosis and treatment to continue providing the best care to our pets.”

Courses at the 2021 NAVC Institute include:

  • ABVP Examination Preparation
  • Emergency Medicine for Everyone
  • Exotic Animal Medicine
  • Practical Dentistry: Chew on This!
  • Practical Orthopedic Surgical Techniques
  • Practical Techniques in Soft Tissue Surgery
  • Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasound

NAVC Institute will take place May 23 – 28, 2020, at the Caribe Royale Orlando. For more information on the NAVC Institute and how to register, visit https://navc.com/institute/. To get an in-depth look at what courses and sessions are offered, read the NAVC Institute Program Guide.
