Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

ORLANDO, FL – MAY 16, 2022 – The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) will host its 21st NAVC Institute (May 21-27), an interactive and immersive conference for veterinary professionals to master techniques they can take back to their clinics and immediately apply to their daily work. New this year are programs specifically designed for veterinary nurses/technicians and an exciting new course on anesthesia that pairs veterinarians and veterinary nurses/technicians who work together as a team when animals are anesthetized.

NAVC Institute Press Release

At the NAVC Institute, veterinary professionals participate in hands-on learning they can immediately use in practice.

“The NAVC Institute is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for veterinary professionals to receive hands-on, real-world education on skills and techniques they can immediately use in their practices,” said NAVC’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dana Varble, DVM, CAE. “We’re excited to introduce new courses specifically designed for veterinary nurses and technicians, including ‘Anesthesia for Your Practice Team’ which pairs veterinarians and veterinary nurses/technicians to create the real-world team experience of administering and managing anesthesia.”

At the NAVC Institute, participants learn from world-renowned instructors in a small, intimate classroom setting, allowing them to receive intensive one-on-one training. This unique environment increases knowledge retention and makes course materials easier to understand, and put into practice to provide the best veterinary care for animals.

Topic areas and course leaders include:

  • Anesthesia for Practice Teams (Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses/Technicians); Khursheed Mama, DVM, DACVAA

  • Case-based Applied Behavioral Medicine (Veterinarians) and, Everyday Behavioral Medicine (Veterinary Nurses/Technicians); Karen L. Overall, MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB, CAAB

  • Practical Orthopedic Surgical Techniques; Ross H. Palmer, DVM, MS, DACVS

  • Practical Techniques in Soft Tissue Surgery; Howard B. Seim III, DVM, DACVS

  • Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasound; Erin Porter, DVM, DACVR, DACVR-EDI; Martha Moon Larson, DVM, MS, DACVR.

“The Soft Tissue Surgery course I took was unbelievably helpful! Once I returned to work, I was immediately able to perform proceduresI learned and was previously nervous to perform. I was able to do them with great confidence, and all the surgeries were successful,” said Katherine O’Brien, DVM, a past NAVC Institute attendee. “I can say that this course helped me help my patients immediately whereas before I was sending them to specialists. Now I have families that drive hours to come to my practice as they know I can help their pet.”

Participants choose one course of study which includes multiple days of lectures and hands-on workshops, plus opportunities to network. Depending on the course selected, participants can earn 12-34 RACE-approved continuing education credits.

The NAVC Institute will take place at the Caribe Royale Orlando. To get an in-depth look at what courses and sessions are offered, read the NAVC Institute Program Guide.

Acupuncture And Herbs:

A Recipe To Help Geriatric Pets And Those With Cancer

Veterinarians to Learn How Integrative and Conventional Medicine can be Combined to Treat Patients with Life Impacting Disease

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

ORLANDO, FL – APRIL 14, 2022 – Acupuncture, herbal medicine and other non-traditional options are growing in popularity for treating pets with cancer, chronic renal failure, severe pain associated with chronic arthritis and other ailments, even extending life for geriatric patients and improving quality of life.

Acupuncture for geriatric patients, cancer treatments that start with herbs and nutrition, and alternative treatments for common neurologic conditions are among the topics veterinarians from around the world will learn about from veterinary experts during the "Level Up: Integrative Medicine" virtual summit, presented by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC), on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19 and 21.

A cat undergoes electroacupuncture treatment.

“As many people are open to integrative medicine to treat illness in humans, the same approaches are now being applied to help our pets live longer and enjoy a better quality of life,” said Dana Varble, DVM, CAE, NAVC’s Chief Veterinary Officer. “The Level Up virtual summits are another example of how the NAVC is opening the door for veterinary professionals everywhere to learn about advances in animal healthcare that can be used immediately in their practices.”

Acupuncture offers an alternative treatment option for geriatric patients where conventional treatments may be difficult. During the session “Integrative Approach to Geriatric Patients,” Huisheng Xie, BSvm, MS, PhD, professor of the Chi University, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Florida and the China Agricultural University, will discuss how acupuncture can relieve pain, alleviate other illness and extend an animal’s life with a better quality of life.

“Quality of life in geriatric animals is one of the top concerns for pet owners and their veterinarians. Acupuncture works on the whole body by stimulating multiple internal systems that help the body respond to help with pain and even repair damaged tissue,” said Dr. Xie. “What we achieve with acupuncture is that the animal maintains the highest quality of life as long as possible before the end of life which we can often extend another three to five years.”

“Level Up: Integrative Medicine” summit attendees will also learn about integrative treatments for common neurologic conditions observed in general veterinary practice. Deanne Zenoni, DVM, CVSMT, CVMRT, CVA, an associate veterinarian at Tops Veterinary Rehabilitation and Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital as well as an instructor at the Healing Oasis, will lead an in-depth discussion about how exercise and hydrotherapy can be used to treat patients with degenerative myelopathy, a disease affecting the spinal cord which can lead to lameness, difficulty with stairs or reluctance to do certain activities.

“Just like in people, we target weak areas and work to help the dog maintain or regain independent mobility. Hydrotherapy is a whole body strengthening due to the resistance of the water but the buoyancy and warmth helps with improved weight bearing and range of motion of the pet,” said Dr. Zenoni. “Exercises are something that can be done at home as part of the daily routine as well.”

Additionally, summit attendees will learn how herbal medicine and diet can help a pet with a cancer diagnosis. Nicole Sheehan, DVM, CVA, CVCH, CVFT, MATP, owner of Whole Pet Animal Hospitals, will present a two-part lecture that addresses how herbs and nutrition are used, in addition to conventional treatments, to improve quality of life, maximize survival times, and provide practical strategies for pet owners to contribute to the healing process at home.

“Level Up” is a new series of virtual events developed by the NAVC and hosted on their virtual education platform, VetFolio, to help veterinary professionals take their careers to the next level. Registrants can receive up to four hours of continuing education. Click here to register.

Veterinary Nurses And Technicians To Learn Self-Advocacy And Personal Wellbeing Techniques During Free Webinar

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

First of three-webinar series is part of the North American Veterinary Community’s Veterinary Nurse Empowerment Initiative

ORLANDO, FL – April 6, 2022 – Veterinary nurses and technicians are passionate about what they do. As critical members of the veterinary healthcare team focused on helping animals live long, healthy lives, it can be easy to become so immersed in their profession that they forget to prioritize their wellbeing.

Learning to advocate for themselves and practice self care is the focus of the “Nurse Empowerment: Elevating Recognition and Wellbeing in the Profession'' webinar the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) will host on Wednesday, April 13, at noon EDT. Participation in the live webinar is free and registration can be accessed by clicking here.

Leading veterinary nurses and technicians participating in the roundtable event will offer real, actionable learnings that attendees can use immediately at the clinic when interacting with other members of the veterinary team and pet owners, too.

“The NAVC is committed to supporting the entire veterinary healthcare team and that includes helping to elevate the role of veterinary nurses and technicians so they can reach their full potential,” said Gene O’Neill, NAVC CEO. “The webinar series, a key part of the NAVC’s broader veterinary nurse/technician empowerment initiative, is designed to give these critical team members the tools and resources to take care of and advocate for themselves.”

Moderated by NAVC Program Specialist Samantha Sacasa, CVT, the virtual event will feature a distinguished panel of credentialed veterinary nurses and technicians including:

  • Rebecca Rose, AAS, CVT, a certified career coach, founder and president of CATALYST Veterinary Professional Coaches

  • Megan Brashear, BS, RVT, VTS (ECC), Senior Manager of Veterinary Nursing at the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital

  • Jamie Davis, CVPM, Veterinary Practice Coach at Veterinary Growth Partners

“I love that wellbeing is part of this webinar because it takes a lot of energy to advocate for oneself,” said Brashear. “In order to have that energy, we need to take care of ourselves. We have to have wellbeing to make that work.

“I will encourage webinar attendees to take 30 seconds to help pet owners understand that we are on the same side,” continued Brashear. “Pet owners should know that veterinary technicians can answer many important questions such as medication side effects or what will happen during an upcoming procedure. Building good relationships with pet owners helps us do our jobs better.”

A lack of understanding about their roles and capabilities by pet owners contributes to the challenges credentialed veterinary nurses and technicians face and may ultimately create a stressful working environment.

In fact, a recent survey of U.S. pet owners, commissioned by the NAVC revealed that 63% percent of pet owners do not know that credentialed veterinary nurses and technicians are the animal healthcare equivalent of registered nurses and are tasked with performing life-saving and life-enhancing medical tasks and procedures.

The webinar is the first of three in a series that was announced by the NAVC at the Veterinary Meeting and Expo (VMX) in January as part of the industry-transforming Veterinary Nurse Empowerment Initiative. The initiative also includes a national consumer awareness and education campaign sponsored by the NAVC and VCA Animal Hospitals, with support from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in American (NAVTA), designed to increase pet owners’ understanding of the role of veterinary nurses and technicians.

Future webinars include:

  • “Nurse Empowerment: Improving Compensation and Turnover,” on Wednesday June 1, 2022, at noon, EDT

  • “Nurse Empowerment: Optimizing Utilization and Job Satisfaction,” on Wednesday, August 31, at noon, EDT

Veterinary Professionals Expand Oral Care Skills at Level Up: Dentistry

Veterinary Professionals Expand Oral Care Skills at Level Up: Dentistry

Free Virtual Event, February 24, Offers Learnings that can be Immediately Applied in Veterinary Clinics.

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

ORLANDO, FL – FEBRUARY 17, 2022 – Oral disease is one of the most common diseases in pets but among the least understood because clinical signs are generally subtle or absent. Patients with dental disease are often in pain and lack clinical signs.

As part of February’s Pet Dental Health Month, the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) will offer LevelUp: Dentistry, on Thursday, February 24, and it is open to veterinary professionals worldwide. This free virtual event is the second offering in the new Level Up educational series available through VetFolio.com.

“Untreated oral disease can lead to many health problems in animals,” said NAVC Chief Veterinary Officer Dana Varble, DVM, CAE. “With consistent and thorough assessment and treatment by the veterinary healthcare team, many of the dental issues our pets may develop can be resolved within general practice and without having to send the animal to a specialist. This is a benefit to all – the veterinary clinic, client and, most important of all, the patient.”

Attendees will learn dental techniques that can be applied immediately in their respective veterinary clinics, enabling primary care veterinary team members to improve their client relationships and patient care.

The Level Up: Dentistry includes three interactive sessions:

The Gold Standard – Steps to a COHAT – Mary L. Berg, BS, RVT, RLATG, VTS (Dentistry) will walk attendees through the proper Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) steps and explain why it is more than just teeth cleaning. Berg is president of Beyond the Crown Veterinary Education.

Managing Difficult Extractions and Extraction Complications in the Dog – There are many possible reasons why a dog might need a tooth extracted, whether due to a fracture or periodontal disease. Sandra Manfra Marretta, DVM, Diplomate ACVS, AVDC will lead a discussion on how to make difficult extractions in dogs more efficient, less traumatic and with fewer complications. She is a Professor Emerita in Small Animal Surgery and Dentistry at the University of Illinois.

Difficulties in Opening and Closing the Mouth: Differentials and Treatments – When presented with a patient that is having difficulty opening their mouth, the clinician is faced with challenges that are often life-threatening. Boaz Arzi, DVM, DAVDC, DEVDC, FF-AVDC-OMFS will inform practitioners of the possible differential diagnosis, imaging, and therapeutic options. Dr. Arzi is an associate professor of dentistry and oral surgery at the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Animal health’s creative marketing award winners were

ORLANDO, FL — January 19, 2022 — The winners of The VETTY Awards, the creative marketing competition dedicated to animal health advertising, design, digital, experiential and social marketing, were revealed this week at VMX 2022, presented by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC).

The competition is open to marketing campaigns for products and services that support the animal health community, including pharmaceuticals, pet foods, diagnostic equipment, professional associations, pet advocate organizations, and more.

This year’s competition included entries from 2020 and 2021 after the 2020 VETTYs Award was put on hold due to COVID-19.

“There were so many wonderfully creative and inventive entries this year,” said NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill. “It’s inspiring to know that not even lockdowns or working remotely could dampen the community’s creative spark. Instead, these companies and agencies rose to the challenge, and deserve tremendous accolades for achieving all they did.”

The competition featured several new categories dedicated to some of the marketing evolution that took place during the initial pandemic lockdown, including awards for virtual events.

The top prizes, including Best In Show (For-Profit), Best In Show (Non-Profit), Judges Awards, Large Animal Award, and the NAVC Spotlight winner were announced live on-stage prior to the start of VMX’s traditional Monday concert presented by Merck Animal Health.

The NAVC, the world’s leading not-for-profit association dedicated to supporting the global veterinary health community, introduced THE VETTYs in 2017 to recognize and reward the marketing excellence that helps fuel the rapidly growing animal health industry, which generates over $10 billion in revenue in the US alone each year.
