NAVC and MentorVet Partner To Provide Veterinary Nurses/Technicians Access to New Approach to Mentorship

Flash Mentoring Programs to be Available During NAVC HiVE Vet Nurse + Tech Event

ORLANDO, FL (Sept. 28, 2023) –  The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) announces its support of MentorVet Tech, a new program created by MentorVet that is redefining veterinary mentorship with a holistic approach to helping veterinary nurses/technicians thrive in every aspect of their career. MentorVet and the NAVC are partnering to offer an extension of the MentorVet Tech program to veterinary nurses and technicians with multiple flash mentorship sessions. These interactive 90-minute sessions will be provided for no additional cost during NAVC’s HiVE Vet Nurse + Tech event October 16-18 in Austin, TX, and facilitated by the MentorVet Team.

"The NAVC is pleased to partner with MentorVet to help reach, recruit, and engage veterinary nurses and technicians to be part of this program,” said NAVC CEO, Gene O'Neill. “It is a perfect complement and extension of the NAVC Veterinary Nurse Empowerment Initiative we launched in 2021 to help support and elevate veterinary nurses and technicians in their careers. HiVE and MentorVet

Addie Reinhard, DVM, MS, Founder & CEO of MentorVet and Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT, MentorVet Tech Program Director

MentorVet Tech was developed by Addie Reinhard, DVM, MS, mental health professionals, and expert veterinary technicians including MentorVet Tech program director, Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT. The program was created with the mental health and wellbeing of veterinary nurses and technicians in mind and includes six months of online professional skills training, peer group mentoring, paired mentorship, and mental health and financial coaching all designed to address the unique needs of veterinary technicians and nurses. The full MentorVet Tech program is set to run every six months with the next session commencing in Spring of 2024.

“Veterinary technicians have long been overlooked and yet are vital for our profession. In fact, evidence shows that this career group may be at an even higher risk for mental health challenges than their veterinarian counterparts.” said Reinhard. “Very few wellbeing resources currently exist for this group of individuals, and we are excited to be able to offer evidence-based programming for veterinary technicians at any stage of their career to give them the education, resources, and human support they need to have sustainable careers within veterinary medicine. We are thrilled that the NAVC is helping support this important initiative.”

MentorVet has three programs in operation including their flagship program MentorVet Leap, a mentorship and professional development program for early-career veterinarians that includes peer support, professional skills development, one-on-one coaching, and much more. Reinhard and her team have conducted research based around MentorVet Leap and their early findings have shown significant decreases in mean burnout, stress, and serious psychological distress, with a significant increase in mean wellbeing levels.

MentorVet’s programming, including MentorVet Tech, is fully virtual and available in all 50 states, reaching veterinary nurses/technicians across the nation. MentorVet Tech is sponsored by the NAVC, Merck Animal Health, and The Blue Buffalo Co.

Summit Explores Intersection of Human and Veterinary Medicine

Global Leaders at the Forefront of Scientific Breakthroughs Collaborate to Advance Human and Veterinary Medicine At Annual Veterinary Innovation Summit

ORLANDO, FL and KANSAS CITY, Mo.SEPTEMBER 20, 2023  – The 7th annual Veterinary Innovation Summit (VIS), sponsored by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) and the Veterinary Innovation Council (VIC), will focus on the future of animal healthcare and how breakthroughs in human medicine can be adapted to advance animal healthcare and vise versa. The summit brings together some of the most progressive leaders and thinkers from the global healthcare industry, futurists who are at the forefront of scientific innovation and medicine and trailblazers in biotechnology to strategize on advancing human and animal medicine. VIS takes place October 9 - 11 in Kansas City, Mo.

“Veterinary medicine has long benefited from human medicine, and human medicine from veterinary medicine, with the intersection of healthcare breakthroughs never as exciting and promising as they are today. Incredible advances in technology are bringing new ways to diagnose and treat conditions that were inconceivable just a few years ago,” said Eleanor Green, DVM, Founding Dean of Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine, professor and Dean Emerita of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University and VIC Board Chair. “We have never before had such a gathering of brilliant minds and leaders across so many connected fields, and this year’s Veterinary Innovation Summit promises to set a new path of even greater collaborations that will further advance healthcare for both animals and people.”

Speakers and session highlights include:

How the use of light rays and sound can eradicate glioblastomas, cancer cells in the brain that are almost always terminal, without damaging any healthy brain tissues. Keynote speaker Mary Lou Jepsen, CEO and Founder of Openwater, and one of the world’s foremost engineers and scientists in optics, imaging and display, will present on this breakthrough technology that could replace the MRI machine with a less expensive, more efficient and wearable system. Jepsen was named one of the most influential people in the world by Time Magazine and one of CNN's top 10 thinkers in science and innovation for her work in display innovation. She founded and led two moonshots at Google and was an executive at Facebook/Oculus VR to advance virtual reality.

“Will Veterinary Medicine Cure Cancer in the Next Dog’s Lifetime?” is the focus of a panel led by David Haworth, DVM, PhD. According to Dr. Haworth, dogs are one third more likely to get cancer than humans and pet parents cite cancer as their number one fear when it comes to their dog’s health. There are incredible advances being made in human oncology, but they are not being widely adopted or readily transferred into veterinary medicine. What is it about veterinary medicine that makes getting these new therapies to market and into practice so difficult? This panel will look at this paradox and the challenges that veterinary medicine has faced in making substantial gains in survival rates for cancer. They will also discuss the groundbreaking success of clinical trials in canine cancer treatment, most notably osteosarcoma, and their broader implications in human medicine. It will highlight how clinical trials in animals can fast-pace cancer drug approval in human medicine while dogs receive cutting edge treatments before they are available for human use.

World-renowned medical futurist Bertalan Meskó, PhD will talk about AI, precision medicine, wearable technology, and digital health. He will also focus on future innovations in human medicine and their implications for veterinary medicine. Dr. Meskó is The Medical Futurist and the Director of The Medical Futurist Institute analyzing how science fiction technologies can become a reality in medicine and healthcare.

“Can We Make Dogs Live Forever?” is the focus of a presentation by Brennen McKenzie, MA, MSc, VMD, Associate Veterinarian, Adobe Animal Hospital, Los Altos, CA and Director of Veterinary Medicine, Loyal, San Francisco, Calif.  This discussion takes a new look at aging as a treatable problem, not an inevitable, unavoidable progression in life. Dr. McKenzie will share the latest on pre-clinical research and a pilot clinical study he is leading for Loyal for Dogs on the first pharmaceutical product intended to extend lifespan and healthspan in dogs. The FDA has provided protocol concurrence for this pivotal clinical study and will validate whether this drug extends canine lifespan and healthspan. This pivotal clinical trial will begin in late 2023. It will be one of the largest and longest clinical trials in dogs ever- approximately 1,000 dogs evaluated at 50 sites around the U.S. and lasting about 4 years.

Visual AI. Susan Groeneveld will show how AI is transforming pain detection in cats, who are masters at hiding pain, and hastening the use of pain management. AI will pervade most conversations at VIS.

Pitch Competition featuring emerging and potentially disruptive technologies. Exhibiting startup companies also look at how AI technology can provide early screening and detection from home, improvements to clinic efficiency, early cancer screening using nematodes, advancements in genetic testing, and microbiome analysis.

  • Maximizing Analgesic Efficacy and Safety in Anesthetized Patients - Effective analgesia for the duration of pain is paramount to patient health, welfare and quality of life. In this session, Tamara Grubb, DVM, PhD, DACVAA, President-Elect IVAPM will discuss how to maximize analgesia in anesthetized patients. Dr. Grubb will address the importance of multimodal analgesia in effective anesthesia protocols, and how to best accomplish this by examining the pain pathway.

  • Looking at a Local, but Thinking Outside the Blocks - Shauna Feldsher BS, CVT, CCFP, VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia) will take a deeper look at lidocaine and the beneficial uses it has outside of locoregional anesthesia.

  • Limiting Opioid Use: By Force and Choice - Veterinary professionals have been taught that opioids are the gold standard for moderate to severe pain. Now many practices are having to reconsider inventory, home prescriptions, and balancing best practices with safety. In this session, Stephen J. Cital RVT, SRA, RLAT, CVPP, VTS-LAM (Res. Anesthesia) will discuss options for pain management less reliant on opioids and practical approaches for prescribing medications to go home.

The Level Up: Pain Management hour-long sessions begin at 6 p.m. EDT. Registered participants can receive up to three interactive continuing education hours.

Veterinary Innovation Summit Focuses on Access to Care

Increasing Access To Veterinary Care Tops The Agenda At The 6th Annual Veterinary Innovation Summit

Topline findings to be released from a new study on the impact of DEI barriers to pet ownership

ORLANDO, FL – JUNE 21, 2022 – While more than 70% of US households have pets, and the overwhelming majority of pet owners see them as family members, an estimated 88 million animals receive minimum to no veterinary care, according to the Veterinary Industry Council (VIC). Finding solutions to remove barriers and expand access to a spectrum of care are among the issues veterinary industry leaders will tackle at the sixth annual Veterinary Innovation Summit, September 27-28, in Portland, OR, sponsored by VIC and the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC). Register and learn more at VeterinaryInnovationSummit.com

The summit will feature a CEO-led panel on the future landscape of animal health and sessions on timely issues including: how to meet increased demand for veterinary care; the immediate need for a new mid-level veterinary practitioner position to help address the veterinary workforce challenges; and a top line report from a novel study on DEI barriers to pet ownership and care.

Veterinary Innovation Summit

“Financial constraints are just one of the many barriers families face when trying to provide healthcare to the animal members of their families. Other barriers, just as formidable, include geography, travel and transportation, cultural and communication differences, owner awareness of the value of preventive care, and more,” said Douglas Aspros, DVM and VIC Board Chair. “The Veterinary Innovation Council believes it is important for all animals to have access to basic veterinary healthcare services. As the leaders in our industry, we need to look for new, more flexible options for families, and cannot let the desire to always deliver ‘gold standard’ care become another barrier itself. We need to accept and support access to a spectrum of care so that veterinarians and their teams can meet their clients where they are.”

The sixth annual Veterinary Innovation Summit invites progressive thinkers to gather, network and strategize for the future while reimagining the delivery of care through a more client-centered approach. The 2022 event will focus on how technology intersects with traditional veterinary care, advocate for transformational changes, help develop solutions that advance the veterinary profession and build future-ready leaders.

Speaker and Session Highlights:

  • Breaking the Barriers to Accessible Veterinary Care
  • DEI Research on Barriers to Pet Ownership and Care
  • Exploring Consumer Insights and Bridging the Generational Differences
  • Reimagining the Future Delivery of Veterinary Care
  • Continuous Improvement and Strategy
  • Delivering Care to More Patients Through a Client-Centered Approach
  • Insight: Cultural Differences & Self Awareness for Leadership
  • Keeping Innovation Alive: What is "Big Vet" Missing
  • AI in Veterinary Practice: Opportunities and Compromises
  • CEO Roundtable: The Future Landscape for Animal Health
  • Adapt or Die!

The Summit will also showcase new and innovative companies in the veterinary profession culminating in a live Pitch Competition.

“The NAVC founded the Veterinary Innovation Council to bring together the industry’s best thinkers and innovators to develop and champion solutions to key emerging issues in our industry,” said NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill and past VIC Board Chair. “With the veterinary industry’s leading organizations behind it and serving on its Board, we will further elevate access to healthcare for animals worldwide.”

The VIC Board is comprised of leaders and executives from some of the most innovative companies and academia serving the veterinary profession including Animal Health Economics; Animal Policy Group; ASPCA Animal Hospital; Covetrus, North America; Hill’s Pet Nutrition US; IDEXX; Mars Veterinary Health; Merck; Nationwide; Petco Love; PetIQ; Pet Smart Charities & Pet Smart Charities of Canada; Purina; Royal Canin; The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine; Veterinary Business Advisors; Veterinary Practice Partners; and WellHaven Pet Health. Level Up: Nutrition Summit Helps Make Client Discussions More Productive

Level Up: Nutrition Summit Helps Make Client Nutrition Discussions More Productive So Pet Owners Can Plan At Home

Veterinary Nutrition Experts Will Present Tools for Veterinary Teams to Strengthen Conversations with Clients During Virtual Event, Sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition

Note: This article contains information that is considered out of date.

ORLANDO, FL – JUNE 7, 2022 – A nutritional assessment is one of the five vital assessments veterinary healthcare teams should complete during each patient exam. Veterinary professionals rely on pet owners for insight into home feeding habits to properly assess the animal’s health. Those conversations can often be complicated when clients make nutrition decisions based on misinformation saturating today's market.

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) and Hill’s Pet Nutrition will host the Level Up: Nutrition Summit, on Thursday, June 16, beginning at 6 p.m. EST, where veterinary professionals will learn about new techniques to perform more successful nutrition exams, to better educate pet owners, and more effectively engage clients in creating and maintaining nutritional health plans for their pets.

While the summit is geared toward the entire veterinary team, it also includes content specifically designed to help veterinary nurses/technicians assume leadership roles in nutrition education within the practice.

LevelUp Nutrition Background Image

“Nutrition is important to an animal’s health but pet owners, while well-intended, often get misinformation that may lead to poor diet choices for their pet,” said NAVC Chief Veterinary Officer Dana Varble, DVM, CAE. “That is why nutrition should be assessed at every exam so the veterinary team can help sort through the plethora of information that’s out there and, together, develop the strategy for food and treats that best contribute to the animal’s health.”

The Level Up: Nutrition Summit includes three interactive sessions designed to help veterinary teams incorporate a nutrition assessment into each patient visit and to effectively educate pet owners to maximize the animal’s health and longevity:

  • A Modern Team Approach to Nutrition Recommendations - Led by Jennifer Hull, DVM, MS, and Vicky Ograin, MBA, RVT, VTS (Nutrition), this session will focus on the importance of nutrition assessments and how team members can simplify the conversation so it resonates with pet owners.

  • 4PAWS and Teamwork: A Pathway to Success in Nutritional Recommendations - Michael T. Robbins, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition) will demonstrate how to incorporate the acronym 4PAWS into each patient visit: Purpose of visit, Allow client input, use Warmth and empathy, and Solutions. Robbins will explain why it is beneficial to communicate with pet owners in this fashion.

  • Veterinary Nurse Nutrition Consults: Helping Clients with Diet Choices - Credentialed veterinary nurses/technicians are highly-skilled and educated professionals and can be great resources for delivering the best nutritional information for pets. Kara Burns MS, MEd, LVT, VTS (Nutrition), VTS-H (Internal Medicine, Dentistry) will explain how veterinary nurses/technicians should promote clinical nutrition and demonstrate in-clinic behaviors that benefit their patients, clients, and practices.

“The free Level Up: Nutrition Summit is another example of the NAVC’s commitment to providing all veterinary professionals access to lifelong learning that benefits the animal healthcare team and the pets they care for,” said NAVC CEO Gene O’Neill.
