Ana Avellaneda, DVM
  • Dr. Ana Avellaneda was born and raised in Barcelona (Spain). Dreaming of becoming a veterinarian since the age of 12, she graduated from the Veterinary School in Barcelona (UAB) in 1994. She worked for 15 years at a Referral Small Animal Hospital in Barcelona, always related to emergency medicine and surgery. After spending almost 4 years in France with her family, she moved to Guelph in 2015 and completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 2016. She has been working at OVC as part of the Smith Lane Animal Hospital team and as seasonal lecturer. Following her passion for emergency medicine, she joined the TVEH Emergency team wishing to keep providing the best care to emergency patients.
  • In her spare time, she loves to hike, enjoy nature, read and spend time with her family and pets.

Cristina Pérez, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DECVIM
  • Dr. Cristina Perez received her DVM from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), where she did a small animal rotating internship, followed by a second internship and Internal Medicine Residence at the University of North Carolina (USA). She holds both DACVIM as well as DECVIM-SA diploma. She obtained a PhD in Bartonella and other vector borne infections by the University of Helsinki (Finland). Dr. Perez has worked in the Internal medicine department of various european universities, such as University of Leipzig (Germany), and University of Helsinki (Finland) and the ECC department of the University of Bern (Switzerland). Since 2022 she works at the Small Animal Hospital Canis Girona, Spain, and collaborates weekly with the largest private hospital in Switzerland, Tierklinik Aarau West. Her interests are infectious diseases, nephrology and endoscopy.

  • Anna graduated from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2012. She completed a rotating internship (2012-2013), followed by a neurology internship (2013-2014), and an ECVN approved residency programme (2014-2017) at Ars Veterinaria, Barcelona, Spain.
  • In 2018, she relocated to the UK and became EVBS, RCVS Neurology specialist and Acreditada AVEPA. She worked as a Senior Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Edinburgh from 2018-2021 and became Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. From 2021-2023 Anna worked as the Head of the Neurology Department and Medical director at Anicura Ars Veterinaria in Barcelona, Spain. Since 2021 she also works at VetCT as a Specialist Teleconsultant. Anna is currently the head of the neurology department at Universidad Europea, and Hospital Veterinaria del Mar.
  • Anna actively participates in teaching and research, serving as a lecturer in various postgraduate programmes and congresses. She has numerous publications in several international journals.
  • Her primary interests within the field of neurology include neuroimaging, neurosurgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours. She is a strong advocate for innovation in teaching, mental wellbeing, and climate change.

Carlos Sánchez, DVM, MSc
  • Dr. Carlos Sanchez oversees the veterinary programs, animal hospital, and animal nutrition at the Oregon Zoo. Dr. Sanchez was born in Bogota, Colombia, but grew up in Mexico City; He received a master's in science from the Royal Veterinary College in London sponsored by the British government, and in 2000 became the first Latin-American veterinarian to be accepted in an approved 3-year Zoo-Medicine Residency in the United States at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sanchez worked at the Smithsonian National Zoo for seven years before joining two larger zoos before landing at Oregon Zoo. He strives to provide excellent animal care with the goal of enhancing animal welfare and contributing to conservation programs.

  • Luis graduated with Honors at the University of Chile in 1987. He began his Faculty career in the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department, but soon after moved to the Small Animal Medicine Department. He got his MSc degree in Animal Pathology and moved to the USA for a Fellowship at the University of Florida.
  • He received training in Emergency and Critical Care in Human patients at the Center Hospital for ER & Trauma in Santiago, Chile, and in Veterinary patients at the Universities of Florida, Washington State, Virginia- Maryland and UC- Davis.
  • He was the Chairman of the Small Animal Medicine Residence Program and was the Director of the three Teaching Hospitals of the College of Veterinary Medicine until 2006 when he decided to move back to private practice as the Medical Director of Las Condes Clinical Hospital.
  • He moved to the USA to work as a Medical Advisor for Quality Assurance with Banfield Pet Hospital in 2007. He received his license certification and came back to active practice serving as the Lead DVM in the first and largest Hospital that the Company has, located in Portland Oregon, known as “Classic”. After a 2 years Program, he was certified as Veterinary Chief of Staff.
  • Later in 2015, he moved to a new position as the Chief of Staff for the Health and Education Hospital of Hannah the Pet Society in Tigard, Oregon, where he was the Chief Medical Officer until August 2019.
  • In 2020, after working as Relief ER Doctor for 13 hospitals in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, he took over the Manager DVM position for the National Veterinary Associates at the Tigard Animal Hospital. Since then he moved back working as a relief ER DVM for other Hospitals in the Oregon Washington area in the NW region.
  • Luis launched in March 2010 his 1st book: “Trauma in Companion Animals”, and 2015 his second book: “Management of Emergency by Trauma in Small Animals”. Also, he published numerous articles and proceedings in journals and magazines worldwide. In September 2019 he published his 3rd Book: “The Cat Hit by a Car”.
  • He had lectured at international congresses and meetings and Continuing Education Programs in more than 49 countries all over the world. Luis also has received multiple recognitions and awards during his career.
  • His areas of Interest are Internal and Emergency medicine, Trauma, Sepsis, CPR and Burns in Small Animals.

Federico Vilaplana Grosso, LV, DECVDI, DACVR
  • Federico graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Science of Córdoba in 2008, where he continued working for a few months as an intern in the small animal department.
  • After a year of externships in different hospitals in Spain and France, he began a small animal rotating internship at the National Veterinary School of Alfort. He later continued his training with a specialized internship in internal medicine and another specialized internship in radiology at the same institution.
  • Next, he began a European residency in diagnostic imaging at Utrecht University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where he obtained the diploma of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI). He then stayed working for a year at the Utrecht University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
  • He later moved to the United States and worked for a year as an Assistant Professor at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. Since 2017, he has been working as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, where he also became diplomate American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR). In 2022, Federico has been promoted to Clinical Associate Professor.
