This legislation, technically called the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act, will finally bring the incredible benefits of a trained service dog to veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Specifically, it gives the Department of Veterans Affairs authority to use trained service dogs as a treatment option for veterans with PTSD – an option that was not previously available despite evidence that trained service dogs reduce suicidal ideation among these veterans. The bill also extends veterinary health insurance benefits to veterans with service dogs to assist with ongoing care for the dog.
This is an exciting moment and proof that your voice matters!
