Sally Haddock, DVM

Dr. Sally Haddock is the owner/founder of St. Marks Veterinary Hospital located in the vibrant East Village of NYC, where she and her committed staff have been providing high quality and compassionate care to NYC pets since 1986. She has a special interest in avian and exotic pets as well as dogs and cats.

An Ohio native, Dr. Haddock received her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Miami University (Ohio) and in 1980, her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University.

She began her career in a private practice in Pittsburgh, followed by an internship and then a medical residency at the prestigious Animal Medical Center of New York City. There she honed her veterinary skills which contribute to the well-rounded vet she is today. It was during this time that Dr. Haddock’s book, “Making of a Woman Vet” was published. The book describes the rigors of veterinary college and the trials and triumphs of veterinary practice.

While raising a family and managing a thriving, 5 vet practice, Dr. Haddock has never wavered in her commitment to service in veterinary medicine. She chaired the Annual Awards Banquet of the VMANYC for over 15 years and served several years as Program Chair for the Atlantic Coast Veterinary Conference. She is equally active in her local community, where her practice works with NY SAVE, providing emergency care to pet owners with financial need, and Paws NY, helping to provide veterinary services to people who are housebound and need help caring for their pet. Dr. Haddock is one of a few select veterinarians who have received the Merit Award and the Outstanding Service Award from the Veterinary Medical Association of New York City.

As St Marks Vet has grown, allowing Dr. Haddock to work a less rigorous schedule, she again wanted to give back to the veterinary community which has served her so well. Being elected to the Board of Directors of the NAVC was the perfect way to do so. Dr. Haddock says, “I am so blessed and honored to be working with the highly qualified group of individuals associated with the NAVC. It’s an exciting time to be working with the NAVC with the new upcoming change of location to the Orange County Convention Center. I look forward to my time on the Board and am excited about the future of the NAVC.”

When not working at St. Marks Vet or serving on the Board of NAVC, Dr. Haddock loves spending time with her family, including husband Tom and children Kristen, Todd and Sara, step-sons Jason and Tommy, three grandchildren, Tyler, Serena and Sofia, and two fuzzy four-legged creatures: a Bernese Mountain Dog named Fonzi and a playful Yellow Lab named Barley, who was rejected from Guiding Eyes for the Blind. One of her favorite activities is dining at her husband’s restaurant, Veselka, which is conveniently located on the same block as St Marks Vet. An outdoor enthusiast, her interests include cycling, fitness classes, photography, gardening and just laughing with good friends!

When did Sally first know she wanted to be in veterinary medicine?

Although I was fascinated with animals from an early age, it was almost unheard of back in the 1970‘s for a woman to become a veterinarian. Needless to say, my parents discouraged me from applying to vet school. Despite that, as a freshman Zoology major I volunteered for a local vet while attending college. I saw first-hand how much I loved helping animals and was determined to fight the odds and apply to veterinary school. Fortunately I was blessed to be accepted and my life just fell into place after that. I believe I was truly meant to become a veterinarian!
