Course Description

This is an extensive, hands on course covering everything from basic ultrasound concepts and principals of image manipulation to fine tuning scanning techniques for smaller parts of the small animal abdomen such as adrenal glands and lymph nodes. Participants will go through a series of lectures and guided workshops to become familiar with the normal appearance of all abdominal organs as well as common pathology and how to recognize it sonographically.

Learning Objectives

After completing this program, you will have:

Become familiar with normal sonographic appearance of the small animal abdominal anatomy
Become familiar with the sonographic appearance of common pathologic findings in the small animal abdomen
Learn the basics of ultrasound probe selection and orientation and image manipulation, and work on fine tuning image optimization
Develop a systematic approach to complete abdominal ultrasound

Course Leaders

Erin Porter, DVM, DACVR, DACVR-EDI

Dr. Erin Porter is a 2007 graduate of the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine. Immediately following veterinary school, she practiced as an ambulatory equine practitioner for 2 years, then returned to the University of Florida to complete a specialized internship focused on equine lameness and large and small animal diagnostic imaging. She subsequently completed a residency in Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Florida and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2013. She became a faculty Radiologist at the University of Florida, Veterinary Hospitals in 2013 and was the Service Chief of Diagnostic Imaging from 2017-2022. In 2021, she became board certified as an Equine Diagnostic Imaging specialist within the American College of Veterinary Radiology.

She currently provides Diagnostic Imaging service to the University of Florida Veterinary Hospitals at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Community Care Veterinary Specialists in Gainesville, FL and teleradiology services at Vet-CT. Her imaging interests include equine musculoskeletal imaging and small animal ultrasound. In her spare time, she enjoys jogging, yoga and spending time with her husband and two children.

Martha Moon Larson, DVM, MS, DACVR

Dr. Larson is a professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at the Virginia Polytechnic and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. She earned her veterinary degree from Ohio State University in 1981, completed an internship in surgery at Animal Medical Center, and a residency in radiology at Ohio State University. She also holds a master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1986 and is a diplomate in ACVR. Dr. Moon Larson holds a special interest in imaging the pancreas and hepatobiliary system.
