Position Objective

The North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) is looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Editor to join our team and participate in all stages of the print publication and digital content process. The Assistant Editor will be an all-around editorial generalist for the peer-reviewed print journals Today’s Veterinary Practice and Today’s Veterinary Nurse (10 issues total), and their associated websites. The Assistant Editor will support the Editorial Director to administer, plan and produce various pieces of content, as well as manage various aspects of the production process, from creating agreements and paying invoices to posting and optimizing online content.

Position Responsibilities

Day-to-day production responsibilities for the Assistant Editor include:

  • Work closely with the Editorial Director and other team members on editorial planning
  • Monitor the news cycle for relevant stories for print, online and enewsletter publication; conduct original reporting and interviewing under direction of Editorial Director
  • Post all content from each issue of the print journals to the respective website, and optimize it for search
  • Collect and organize content, under the direction of the Editorial Director, for the enewsletters for both journals
  • Communicate with authors and reviewers to produce content
  • Ensure contracts are in place for each author and reviewer, and submit invoices for payments to contributors in a timely manner, including all necessary paperwork for accounting
  • Maintain editorial content and budget trackers
  • Facilitate the overall management and workflow of the content for each issue and ensure on-time delivery of assets to the Art Director and accurate uploads to the printer
  • Participate in departmental meetings, and assist with special projects as assigned
  • Produce and edit short front of book content pieces for print journals

Accountability and Performance Measures

  • On-time delivery of print publication files to the art director and printer
  • Operate within assigned budgets
  • Contribute to audience and traffic growth by writing relevant content and optimizing it


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Journalism or Communications
  • 2-5 years of experience in print and/or digital media preferred
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills
  • Ability to manage publication workflow
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; comfortable juggling multiple deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop and online content management systems a plus
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices
